The Evolution of Indian Railway
A train is a must go where the rail leads it to. The fundamentals of railway transportation are to move vast traffic carrying goods and people speedily and with at most safety. Indian Railway has planned to set up a Railway Station Development Corporation (RSDC) that works on improving the major railway station by building and developing restaurants, shopping areas and food courts for commercial business and passenger amenities. It is also working hard to add other major facilities like constructing waiting room, computerized reservation facilities, vehicle-parking areas, etc.
In the development process, the railway is also planning to charge service tax on rail users, which will help in the financial development of the railway organization. It has also signed up an agreement with ICICI bank for extending the sale of e-tickets through merchant establishments located in different cities across the country. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has decided to add up more traveling package offers for Singapore, Thailand and Dubai based Indian travelers.
Furthermore, Indian Railway is planning to start its ‘Frequent Traveller Program’, a scheme for rewarding loyalty. It is a strategy developed by airlines now absorbed by railways. It would be applicable for those who book their tickets online. IRCTC soon plans to launch “Rolling deposit scheme” which allows passengers to reserve seats against advance money kept by the corporation. The railway freight traffic has increased recently by 5.2% because of higher demand for coal and iron ore meant for domestic steel plants by the companies, thereby increasing the inflow of money to the country. The emphasis now lies upon sustaining and improving the present output and efficiency along with better and upgraded services to the country for the railway.
